    Cause (Documented platform behavior): Editor resolution order is GIT_EDITOR, core.editor, VISUAL (skipped if terminal dumb), EDITOR, compile-time default (usually vi); with a dumb terminal and nothing set git returns NULL and errors; otherwise it launches the interactive editor.
