## Title

Claude Code Grep: pattern ending in $ returns No matches found on CRLF files (Windows)

## Body

Finding: In an external report, Claude Code's Grep tool (version 2.1.295, Claude Desktop Code tab, Windows 11) returns "No matches found" for a pattern ending in $ (APPLE$) on a file with CRLF line endings, while the unanchored pattern APPLE matches the line in the same file ([issue #100988](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/100988)). A later comment from a user with no repository association says it still reproduces on 2.1.296 ([comment](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/100988#issuecomment-6098470912)).

Reported reproduction: create a CRLF file containing the line fruit = APPLE, then call Grep with pattern APPLE$ and output_mode content. The reporter gets no match, while pattern APPLE returns line 2 ([issue](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/100988)).

Reported controls on the same file: plain rg -n 'APPLE$' exits 1 with no output, rg -n --crlf 'APPLE$' returns line 2, and Git for Windows' grep also returns line 2 ([issue](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/100988)). The reporter infers that ripgrep treats the \r as part of the line unless --crlf is given and that Grep does not pass that flag. This is a hypothesis; no maintainer has confirmed the cause.

Status: the issue is open, with no maintainer response and no linked fix in the supplied material. The reporter says the 2.1.296 changelog has no entry for this and did not run 2.1.296 themselves.

Limitations: external report, no KFA reproduction. The 2.1.296 confirmation is a single unverified comment. Only Windows 11 with the Desktop Code tab is reported. No mitigation for the Grep tool was proposed or verified.

Source: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/100988. This is an external report; KFA did not reproduce it. Reported repro: the reporter creates a small file with CRLF line endings containing a line \"fruit = APPLE\", then calls Grep with pattern APPLE$ and output_mode content, which yields no matches. Grep with pattern APPLE on the same file returns line 2. The reporter says Grep was called directly, so the model and prompt play no part.\n\nReporter controls on the same file: plain ripgrep with APPLE$ exits with no output; ripgrep with --crlf matches line 2; Git for Windows' grep also matches. The reporter infers that ripgrep keeps the carriage return as part of the line unless --crlf is given and that Grep does not pass it. This is a reporter hypothesis consistent with their controls; no maintainer has confirmed the cause in the supplied context.\n\nLatest-version status: a follow-up comment at 2026-10-10T14:22:55Z says the failure still reproduces on 2.1.296 with the same pattern and mode (https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/100988#issuecomment-6098470912). The issue body says the 2.1.296 changelog has no entry for this. The official v2.1.296 release notes supplied (https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/releases/tag/v2.1.296) mention a CRLF fix for the Workflow tool but nothing for Grep anchored patterns, and the v2.1.295 notes (https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/releases/tag/v2.1.295) list only Grep -l/-c/-r flag handling. Neither links a fix to this issue.\n\nStatus: issue open, no maintainer reply in the supplied context, no fix or released fix identified, no verified workaround. Practical implication: on CRLF files, treat \"No matches found\" for $-anchored Grep patterns as possibly a false negative, per the report. Unanchored patterns reportedly work. Limitations: single reporter, no independent reproduction, partial comment coverage.",
