## Title

[BUG] Desktop SSH remote: server upgrade on reconnect kills running sessions (server.shutdown → killed child process groups)

## Body

Finding: In an external report on Claude Desktop SSH remote mode (macOS client, Ubuntu Linux host with kernel 6.8, host CLI 2.1.288 to 2.1.289, latest Desktop as of 2026-10-07), running remote sessions were killed when Desktop replaced its remote server after an auto-update and the Mac reconnected ([issue #100172](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/100172)). This is an external report only; there was no KFA reproduction. Reported sequence: Desktop auto-updated overnight and uploaded a new remote server and CLI to the host. The old server, started about 3 days earlier, kept running two active sessions. When the Mac next reconnected, the reporter says Desktop sent server.shutdown over RPC to the old server. Its log, quoted by the reporter, shows the shutdown RPC received, then cleanup that closed 1 connection and killed 2 child process groups. The new server's log starts in the same second. Both sessions died mid-work; one had a background CI watch and a pending action. Remote Control records showed computer_unreachable with recoverable set to true about 60 s later. The transcript stayed intact, but the sessions had to be resumed by hand ([issue #100172](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/100172)).

Diagnostic value: if a remote session dies right after a Desktop update, look in the remote-server.log.old file under ~/.claude/remote/run/<id>/ for a shutdown RPC followed by a cleanup line that reports killed child process groups. A match is consistent with this report. The reporter also says an earlier sleep period caused separate Desktop-tool timeouts, which they attribute to #94887. That could make the failure look like a sleep-related death when the kill came later from the upgrade ([issue #100172](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/100172)).

Status: no maintainer confirmed a cause. The issue was closed by an automated bot as a duplicate of #93154 on 2026-10-10 ([closure comment](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/100172#issuecomment-6095995368)). The bot's earlier comment only suggested a possible duplicate ([comment](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/100172#issuecomment-6034350435)). Closure is not a fix, and no fix commit or release is supplied, so fix status is unknown.

Limitations: single reporter, logs not independently verified, exact Desktop version unknown, regression status unknown, and the content of #93154 was not supplied. Expected behaviors listed by the reporter (keep the old server until sessions end, defer the upgrade, or warn and auto-resume) are feature requests, not confirmed plans.
