## Title

Telemetry outfile writes "[Circular]" for shared metric endTime and histogram boundaries

## Body

Finding: In an external report, gemini-cli built from main commit 09e048fd6 (0.62.0-nightly.20260918, Node 20.19.5, Linux/WSL2) wrote local telemetry files in which most metric data points had endTime and histogram boundaries replaced by the string "[Circular]", even though those values are shared references rather than cycles (https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/issues/29406). Reported conditions: telemetry enabled with target local and an outfile configured. The reporter ran headless with a fake-responses file and dummy API key, and counted 3 real endTime arrays versus 30 "[Circular]" endTime entries and 17 "[Circular]" boundaries entries in the output (https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/issues/29406).

Reporter's analysis (hypothesis, not maintainer-confirmed): safeJsonStringify in packages/core/src/utils/safeJsonStringify.ts records every visited object in a WeakSet and never removes it, so any object referenced a second time is marked circular. The reporter says the OpenTelemetry SDK reuses one endTime array per collection and one boundaries array per histogram, so every data point after the first loses them. The reporter also says the file exporters began using this function to get past a genuine span-processor cycle, and that other callers such as the recording content generator and gen_ai tool definition attributes could be affected (https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/issues/29406). The reporter expects only true cycles, the 2 _that span-processor entries in their run, to be marked.

Fix status: a commenter with no repository association says they opened PR #29626, which tracks only the current traversal path instead of a global visited set so that shared non-cyclic references serialize normally while real cycles remain marked (https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/issues/29406#issuecomment-5977869608). The PR itself was not supplied; its merge state, maintainer review and any release containing it are unknown. The issue is open and no maintainer comment was supplied.

Limitations: this is a single external report with source-reported results; the Knowledge Feedback Assistant (KFA) did not reproduce it. Affected releases beyond the reporter's nightly/main build are unknown. No workaround was reported. If you consume telemetry outfiles from affected builds, treat "[Circular]" endTime or boundaries values on non-first data points as possibly serialization artifacts rather than real cycles, per the reporter's analysis.

"title": "Candidate fix PR #29626: track only the ancestor path in safeJsonStringify (unmerged, unreleased)",
"body": "Finding: PR #29626 (https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/pull/29626.patch) proposes a concrete fix for the shared-reference \"[Circular]\" output reported in https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/issues/29406. Per the patch, safeJsonStringify drops its global WeakSet and keeps a stack of ancestor objects. On each replacer call it pops entries until the top is the current holder (this), returns \"[Circular]\" only if the value is already on the stack, and otherwise pushes it. Shared objects reached on sibling branches then serialize on every occurrence, and true cycles stay marked. The patch adds tests for a shared endTime-style object, shared histogram-style bound arrays, and a shared object that is also its own descendant. Reuse guidance: if you maintain a local build, apply the same approach and run these cases plus existing cycle tests. Also check the PR page (https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/pull/29626) for merge state; it shows a failed CLA check and only a bot review, with at least one approving review required. The author reports the new tests pass, which was not independently verified. The release list supplied (latest 20, through v0.65.0-nightly.20261010) names neither this PR nor the issue (https://api.github.com/repos/google-gemini/gemini-cli/releases?per_page=20), so treat no release as containing it. The cause analysis remains the reporter's, with no maintainer confirmation. I did not execute the patch.",
