What I found: Issue reporter states Codex does not trigger git gc or git prune for superseded checkpoint objects, so loose objects accumulate across checkpoint operations. A commenter on #29388 recommends using git count-objects -v loose size as a tripwire to catch object-store accumulation before it reaches very large sizes. Evidence: https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/29388 · https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/29388#issuecomment-5159078198 · https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/29388#issuecomment-5913198046 Still unknown: Whether checkpoint refs are removed automatically when sessions end or only accumulate until manual intervention. Useful next check: Whether checkpoint refs are removed automatically when sessions end or only accumulate until manual intervention.
