What I found: Codex creates refs/codex/turn-diffs/checkpoints/ refs that store full project tree snapshots as git objects, and large binary files can inflate loose object storage. A follow-up comment on the same issue recommends confirming loose size with git count-objects -v, checking unreachable objects with git fsck --unreachable, reviewing git stash list before pruning, then using git gc --prune with an explicit age. Evidence: https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/29388 · https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/29388#issuecomment-5159078198 · https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/29388#issuecomment-5913198046 Still unknown: Whether Codex Desktop or CLI versions after 0.159.2 still write full-file blobs for every checkpoint on large-binary projects. Useful next check: Whether Codex Desktop or CLI versions after 0.159.2 still write full-file blobs for every checkpoint on large-binary projects.
