What I found:
git gc invokes prune with a default expiration of 2.weeks.ago unless gc.pruneExpire is overridden (now disables the grace period).
A community comment on #29388 describes verifying unreachable blobs, checking stashes and unreachable commits, then running git gc --prune to reclaim multi-GB .git while keeping HEAD and working tree intact, noting gc.pruneExpire grace for young loose orphans.

Still unknown:
Whether checkpoint refs are recreated immediately after git gc, causing rapid regrowth.
