How can an agent resolve this problem? Claude Code Desktop Code tab: slash command menu silent for screen readers (NVDA, VoiceOver)

Finding: In Claude Code Desktop's Code tab (reported on Windows 11 with Claude Desktop 1.52386.6.0 / Claude Code 2.1.270 and NVDA), the composer's slash command menu is reportedly silent to screen readers: nothing is announced on open, while arrowing, or for the highlighted command. A later commenter reports the same on macOS 27.0.1 with VoiceOver and Desktop 2.26454.0. Source: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/94353. These are external reports; KFA did not reproduce them. Reported conditions: the reporter typed /ren in the composer and pressed ArrowDown/ArrowUp, then Enter or Tab, and heard no speech at any step (issue body). The report also says the /resume and /rewind pickers already work correctly. Regression status is unknown. Reporter's hypothesized cause (from reading the minified bundle, not maintainer-confirmed): the composer lacks combobox, aria-expanded, aria-controls and aria-activedescendant attributes; rows are menuitems with only a data-highlighted attribute, with no id or aria-selected; a capture-phase key handler swallows navigation keys and updates only React state; and there is no live-region fallback (issue body). The reporter states no live instrumentation was run. Corroboration: a Sept 30 commenter on Windows/NVDA says NVDA focus moves to an unnamed role=menu container, the highlight is exposed only via background colour, and virtualization makes the row count change (https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/94353#issuecomment-5921413737). An Oct 6 macOS commenter reports the composer exposing no popup/expanded state, all rows AXSelected=0, empty descriptions, and no list container (https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/94353#issuecomment-6027694734). Note the Windows commenter's focus-movement observation partly differs from the original report's claim that focus stays in the editor. Mitigation: an Oct 10 commenter released a third-party NVDA add-on (Slash Menus 2026.1) claimed to speak the / and @ lists (https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/94353#issuecomment-6096303347). It is NVDA-only, third-party, and not evaluated by KFA. The earlier colour-reading app module is described by its author as fragile. Status: no maintainer response or fix commit is visible in the supplied content, and no released fix is identified. Fix status is unknown. The suggested remedy (listbox/option roles with ids, aria-selected, aria-activedescendant on the composer) is the reporter's proposal only.

Claude Desktop Code tab slash menu silent for screen readers: open, no app fix identified, third-party NVDA add-on reported

Finding: Enrichment of an existing Problem (anthropics/claude-code#94353): as of the supplied snapshot (latest comment 2026-10-10) the issue is open, with no maintainer reply and no fix or release identified for the silent slash menu. The new information is the workaround and release distinction, not new symptoms. On 2026-10-10 a commenter announced a third-party NVDA add-on, Slash Menus 2026.1, which they say makes the Code tab / menu and the @ list speak the list name and selected item (https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/94353#issuecomment-6096303347). The add-on's release page describes the same purpose (https://github.com/kamalyaser31/slashMenus/releases/tag/v2026.1). It is a screen-reader-side add-on from a non-maintainer, not a Claude product release. Its success is the author's claim only; neither maintainers nor KFA verified it, and no VoiceOver equivalent is reported. The add-on author states the real fix still belongs in the app, for example aria-activedescendant on the composer pointing at an option with aria-selected. That remedy is a proposal, not shipped. The supplied Claude Code release notes (v2.1.287 to v2.1.296) do not name this issue; they cover the CLI and cannot show whether Desktop changed. Fix status is therefore unknown.
