How can an agent resolve this problem? Responses API bridge returns reasoning output items without summary and with output_text content
Finding: In an external report against LiteLLM v1.106.0, reasoning output items returned by the Responses API chat-completions bridge fail openai SDK ResponseReasoningItem validation, because summary is missing and content parts are typed output_text rather than reasoning_text (https://github.com/BerriAI/litellm/issues/45552). Reported environment: LiteLLM v1.106.0, Docker deployment, with the repro calling litellm.responses() directly. Models in the repro were anthropic/claude-sonnet-5-5 and deepseek/deepseek-v4-pro, with and without reasoning effort high (issue body).
Reported symptom: the reasoning item in output has no summary field. The reporter says both the OpenAI Responses API and the Open Responses spec require summary, so an item with nothing to summarize should carry an empty array. The reporter also says the item has role and phase, which belong only on message items, and that content parts use output_text. Validation errors listed were summary: Field required and content.0.type expecting reasoning_text. In the third case (Claude with no reasoning parameter), the thinking block was empty, so the item had empty content and only the summary error appeared (issue body).
Suspected location: the reporter believes the item is built with GenericResponseOutputItem, a message item type, in _extract_reasoning_output_items in litellm/responses/litellm_completion_transformation/transformation.py, and that streaming is affected because the final response.completed event is built the same way. This is the reporter's hypothesis, not a maintainer-confirmed cause. A commenter without maintainer association repeated this explanation and said they would emit a spec-shaped item with a regression test (https://github.com/BerriAI/litellm/issues/45552#issuecomment-6080672057).
Fix status: the same commenter later said a fix is up as #45608 (https://github.com/BerriAI/litellm/issues/45552#issuecomment-6084853206). The PR was not supplied or inspected here. Its merge and any release containing it are unknown, and the issue is still open in the supplied data.
Practical implication: clients that strictly parse bridged reasoning items with the openai SDK ResponseReasoningItem model may hit validation errors on this version. No workaround is given in the source.
Limitations: this is an external report only and was not reproduced by KFA. Whether other versions are affected is unknown. Maintainer confirmation is absent.
Problem details
Observed symptom
Reasoning items in output lack the required summary field, use output_text content parts instead of reasoning_text, and carry role and phase fields, so openai SDK ResponseReasoningItem validation fails.
Context
litellm/responses/litellm_completion_transformation/transformation.py (_extract_reasoning_output_items); v1.106.0 (as reported; other versions unknown); /v1/responses or litellm.responses() served through the chat completions bridge for reasoning-capable models (reported with Anthropic and DeepSeek models); External report only; not reproduced by KFA.; The PR #45608 content and URL were not supplied, so it was not inspected; merge and release status unknown.; Comments cover only a public HTML head/tail timeline and may omit middle comments.; Cause is the reporter's hypothesis, not maintainer-confirmed.; Affected version is limited to v1.106.0 as reported; the model names in the repro are as reported.; No workaround stated.

Responses API bridge reasoning items: open fix PR #45608 proposed, merge and release unknown
Finding: This enriches the existing Problem on LiteLLM v1.106.0, where the reporter says the /v1/responses chat-completions bridge returns reasoning items that openai's ResponseReasoningItem rejects. The new information is the linked fix PR #45608, as shown in the supplied snapshot. This is an external report and was not reproduced by KFA. Proposed fix (reported, not shipped): the PR description says the bridge now builds the SDK's ResponseReasoningItem directly, with summary set to an empty list, content parts typed reasoning_text, and no role or phase. It also says regression tests check SDK validation, including the encrypted-only case with empty content (https://github.com/BerriAI/litellm/pull/45608). A commenter without maintainer association had earlier announced the fix as PR #45608 (https://github.com/BerriAI/litellm/issues/45552).
Status distinctions: in the supplied snapshot the PR is open (it was closed and reopened several times), and no merge is shown. The snapshot contains no release notes mentioning it, so a shipped fix cannot be claimed; merge and release status are UNKNOWN. Automated reviewers (Greptile, Veria) reported an open issue: reasoning content in the new shape may bypass post-call guardrail text extraction and rewriting. They also said live end-to-end proof was missing. These are bot claims that were not verified here, and the snapshot does not show them resolved (https://github.com/BerriAI/litellm/pull/45608).
Cause remains the reporter's hypothesis (GenericResponseOutputItem used in _extract_reasoning_output_items); no maintainer has confirmed it in the supplied snapshot. No workaround was reported. Before relying on the fix, check the PR's merge state and the release notes of your LiteLLM version.
