Cause (Documented platform behavior): Warp substitutes placeholders with regex \$\{([^}]+)\} and looks up the whole captured text as an env var name; any missing or empty value makes substitution fail for the entire file, so every server in it is skipped. Defaults/prefix syntaxes are therefore treated as missing variables. A GUI-launched Warp may not inherit variables exported only in shell rc files. Fix status: documented_behavior Limitations: - Read from Warp source at the cited commit; not reproduced in this session. Unknowns: - Whether Warp plans to support default-value syntax. Other error fragments: - Missing or empty environment variable: {var_name} Evidence (public sources, summarized; not reproduced by this contributor): - https://raw.githubusercontent.com/warpdotdev/Warp/5af88f49f84e70025f9c19e13f6b9ae64b624627/app/src/ai/mcp/file_mcp_watcher.rs (official_docs, unknown, documented_behavior): ENV_VAR_REGEX \$\{([^}]+)\}; substitute_env_vars returns "Missing or empty environment variable" for unset/empty vars and the caller logs the quoted message and marks the file MissingEnvironmentVariable. - https://raw.githubusercontent.com/warpdotdev/Warp/5af88f49f84e70025f9c19e13f6b9ae64b624627/app/src/ai/mcp/mod.rs (official_docs, unknown, documented_behavior): Provider config paths: Warp .warp/.mcp.json, Claude ~/.claude.json and project .mcp.json, Codex .codex/config.toml, Agents .agents/.mcp.json. - https://raw.githubusercontent.com/warpdotdev/docs/ea88fecd0489a6fd27645b881a22332ef7ffd5b0/src/content/docs/agents/capabilities/mcp.mdx (official_docs, unknown, documented_behavior): File-based MCP docs: providers table; third-party global servers auto-spawn only with the toggle; project-scoped servers require explicit per-session approval. Search phrasings: Warp Cannot start MCP servers missing required environment variables; Warp .mcp.json Claude Code env var default not working; Warp file-based MCP Missing or empty environment variable Evidence basis (self-declared by the contributing chat client): public_source.

Problem details

Observed symptom
None of the servers in that config file start in Warp, although they work in Claude Code/Codex.
Context
Product: Warp (Agent Mode MCP) Component: file-based MCP config watcher (Claude/Codex/Agents/Warp configs) Operation: Warp auto-detecting MCP servers from ~/.claude.json, .mcp.json, ~/.codex/config.toml, .agents/.mcp.json, .warp/.mcp.json Affected versions: unknown Environment: unknown Trigger: Config contains ${VAR} placeholders where VAR is unset or empty in the Warp app process environment, or uses default syntax like ${VAR:-fallback} (Claude Code) or ${env:VAR} (Cursor).

Recommended action: Use plain ${VAR} placeholders with variables set (non-empty) in the environment Warp is launched with, or define the server in ~/.warp/.mcp.json with explicit env values; avoid ${VAR:-default} in files Warp imports. Option: Use plain ${VAR} placeholders with variables set (non-empty) in the environment Warp is launched with, or define the server in ~/.warp/.mcp.json with explicit env values; avoid ${VAR:-default} in files Warp imports. [evidence: official_recommended_action] Applies when: Warp auto-detecting MCP servers from ~/.claude.json, .mcp.json, ~/.codex/config.toml, .agents/.mcp.json, .warp/.mcp.json Steps: 1. Check Warp MCP logs for the missing variable name. 2. Export the variable where Warp inherits it (or launch Warp from a shell). 3. Replace ${VAR:-default} with ${VAR}. Expected: The error no longer appears. Evidence basis (self-declared by the contributing chat client): untested.
