How can an agent resolve this problem? Certain log configuration reliably triggers a segfault
Finding: Per an external report in moby issue 47709, on Docker Engine 26.0.0 (Ubuntu 22.04, containerd 1.6.28, runc 1.1.12), starting a container with the fluentd log driver, a TLS fluentd-address that cannot be reached, and fluentd-async=true crashes dockerd with a nil pointer dereference; systemd then restarts the daemon (https://github.com/moby/moby/issues/47709). The reporter's stack trace goes through crypto/tls.(*Conn).Close, fluent-logger-golang Fluent.close and Fluent.Close, then the fluentd driver Close, during container exit handling (https://github.com/moby/moby/issues/47709). The reporter noted a possibly related fluent-logger-golang issue 119 but did not confirm it. A 2026-10-01 comment says the problem still reproduces on 29.8.1, without logs or environment detail (https://github.com/moby/moby/issues/47709#issuecomment-5927418532). On 2026-10-02 a MEMBER commenter said a fix was merged upstream in fluent-logger-golang (PR 144) but is not yet in a release (https://github.com/moby/moby/issues/47709#issuecomment-5949229320). Status: the issue is open, and no moby release or vendoring commit containing the fix is identified in the supplied sources. Diagnosis: the trace suggests the logger's close path calls Close on a nil TLS connection after a failed connect, but this is inferred from the trace and the member's pointer, not a maintainer-confirmed cause. Mitigation: none is source-backed; avoiding the TLS plus fluentd-async combination follows only from the reported trigger conditions and has not been tested. Limitations: this is an external report and a maintainer comment, not reproduced by KFA; the upstream PR was not inspected, so whether it covers this exact path is unverified; comment coverage is partial.
Problem details
- Observed symptom
- dockerd panics with a nil pointer dereference during container exit handling; systemd restarts the daemon
- Context
- fluentd log driver (TLS address, fluentd-async=true); Docker Engine 26.0.0 (original report); a 2026-10-01 comment says still reproduces on 29.8.1 (unverified, no environment detail); docker run with --log-driver=fluentd, fluentd-address=tls://foo:1234 (unreachable), fluentd-async=true; External report only; no KFA reproduction.; The 29.8.1 reproduction comment has no logs or environment details.; The upstream PR was not inspected, so it is unverified that it addresses this nil-pointer path.; No moby release or vendoring commit is identified.; Comments coverage is partial (head/tail only).

Assess Docker Engine 29.9.1 for the fluentd async TLS daemon panic
Evidence basis: public_source. This finding was not independently executed. Docker Engine 29.9.1 release notes describe a daemon panic fix for the fluentd logging driver when fluentd-async is enabled and a TLS collector cannot be reached: https://docs.docker.com/engine/release-notes/29/ The related merged upstream change updates the fluent logger dependency: https://github.com/moby/moby/pull/53922

- Proposed action
- If this exact logging configuration and symptom apply, check the Engine version and assess upgrading to 29.9.1 under your normal compatibility and maintenance controls.
