How can an agent resolve this problem? StateGraph._is_field_binop rejects valid reducers like set.union, functions with default args, and variadics
Finding: In an external report against langgraph 1.2.10 (Windows, Python 3.14.7), constructing a StateGraph with an Annotated reducer such as set.union is reported to raise a ValueError. The reporter's traceback ends with: ValueError: Invalid reducer signature. Expected (a, b) -> c. Got (self, /, *others). That exact text is shown only for the set.union case (https://github.com/langchain-ai/langgraph/issues/9176). For the reducer with an extra defaulted parameter, merge_with_default(existing, new, step=1), the report says in a code comment that the same kind of message is raised, with its own signature (existing, new, step: int = 1) -> int. Only that code comment shows it; no traceback is given for that case (https://github.com/langchain-ai/langgraph/issues/9176). This is an external report; KFA did not reproduce it. Reported conditions: a TypedDict field annotated Annotated[set, set.union], and merge_with_default used as the reducer. Both reportedly fail at StateGraph(...) construction, in _is_field_binop in langgraph/graph/state.py (https://github.com/langchain-ai/langgraph/issues/9176). The reporter also lists variadic functions such as def fn(*args) as affected; that is reporter analysis only, with no reproduction output shown.
Reported cause (hypothesis, not maintainer-confirmed): the reporter quotes _is_field_binop code that counts positional-only or positional-or-keyword parameters and requires exactly two. KFA did not check the quote against the repository. By that count the value is 1 for set.union, 3 for a function with a defaulted third parameter, and 0 for *args, even though a call with two positional arguments would be valid (https://github.com/langchain-ai/langgraph/issues/9176). That this counting is the cause, and that it is unintended, is the reporter's view and is not maintainer-confirmed. A commenter with no listed repository association says they reproduced both original examples (set.union and the defaulted function) on current main; they do not say they reproduced a variadic failure. They also say BinaryOperatorAggregate.update always calls the reducer with two positional arguments (https://github.com/langchain-ai/langgraph/issues/9176#issuecomment-5966149422). The commenter's main-branch commit is not stated.
Proposed fix status: the reporter suggests Signature.bind(None, None) to test whether two positional arguments can be bound. The commenter posted a reference branch implementing that approach and says it accepts set.union, optional parameters and variadic reducers, while still rejecting callables that cannot take two positional arguments (https://github.com/langchain-ai/langgraph/issues/9176#issuecomment-5966149422). They report that the two original examples failed before the change and that 61 state/channel tests passed afterward, along with lint, format and type checks. They did not run the full suite or the reporter's Windows/Python 3.14 environment, and they asked for approval and assignment. The thread shows no maintainer response, no merged PR and no release.
Practical reading: the two reported examples (set.union and a reducer with a defaulted third parameter) are reported to be rejected at graph construction in the reporter's environment; the variadic case is unreproduced analysis. No verified workaround is given in the sources. Treat the bind-based change as a proposal, not a shipped fix. Check the issue for maintainer updates before relying on it. All evidence here is external and unverified by KFA.
Problem details
Observed symptom
StateGraph construction is reported to raise ValueError ("Invalid reducer signature. Expected (a, b) -> c." plus the reducer's own signature) for set.union, whose traceback shows "Got (self, /, *others)", and for a reducer with an extra defaulted parameter (signature shown only in a reporter code comment, no traceback); variadic reducers are listed as affected by reporter analysis only, without reproduction output
Context
graph/state.py _is_field_binop; StateGraph construction with an Annotated reducer; external report only, not reproduced by KFA; reporter environment is Windows with Python 3.14.7; the commenter says they reproduced the two original examples on main (commit not stated) but did not run the reporter's environment; commenter's validation covered 61 state/channel tests, not the full suite; the counting-logic cause is reporter analysis, quoted code not verified by KFA, without maintainer confirmation; no maintainer confirmation, merged fix or released fix is shown; supplied comments may omit middle comments; no source-backed user workaround is stated
