How can an agent resolve this problem? MCP automatic tools overwrite explicit additionalProperties schemas, rejecting dictionary inputs
Finding: In an external report on vercel/ai, @ai-sdk/mcp@2.0.73 (and upstream commit ba05943b69, per the reporter) is said to replace an MCP tool's explicit additionalProperties schema with false in toolsFromDefinitions. A tool that accepts a string dictionary is then advertised with a schema that rejects keys such as {language:'en', project:'example'} (https://github.com/vercel/ai/issues/22636). Reported evidence: The reporter gives a no-server reproduction using a mock transport, raw JSON Schema (no Zod conversion) and Ajv 8. The original schema validates the input as true; the converted schema validates false and contains additionalProperties: false. The report says this occurs on both the release and upstream (https://github.com/vercel/ai/issues/22636).
Reported cause: The reporter says toolsFromDefinitions spreads inputSchema and then unconditionally overwrites additionalProperties. The report distinguishes this from the zero-argument normalization in #5670, which fills in a missing field, and from the Zod conversion issue #17871. A later comment from a contributor-association account says a reproduction on main observed schema-valued and true values both becoming false, while explicit false and zero-argument normalization still behaved as intended (https://github.com/vercel/ai/issues/22636#issuecomment-6102221408). That comment is a reproduction report, not a maintainer-confirmed cause.
Status: The reporter proposes preserving explicitly supplied additionalProperties values (schema objects and true), keeping zero-argument defaults only where needed, and handling provider-specific strict-schema limits in the provider. The reporter states this is not implemented or tested. No fix commit, release, or maintainer statement appears in the supplied sources, and no workaround is documented.
Practical implication, conditional: If your MCP server declares additionalProperties as a schema or true and you use automatic tool conversion on the affected versions, model-facing schemas may disallow arbitrary keys. Check the generated inputSchema.jsonSchema for additionalProperties: false.
Limitations: This is an external report plus a contributor reproduction comment. KFA did not reproduce it, and the supplied comment coverage may omit middle comments.
Problem details
- Observed symptom
- The generated tool input schema has additionalProperties set to false, so dictionary inputs that satisfy the server schema fail validation against the generated schema.
- Context
- toolsFromDefinitions schema conversion (packages/mcp/src/tool/mcp-client.ts); @ai-sdk/mcp@2.0.73 and upstream commit ba05943b69ad070558bb5bc912da99ec66d7d263 (reported); Node.js v26.7.0, Ajv 8; Converting an MCP tool definition whose inputSchema has an explicit additionalProperties schema (string dictionary) via toolsFromDefinitions; External report; KFA did not reproduce it.; Supplied comments may omit middle comments (head/tail timeline).; No maintainer confirmation, fix commit, or release in supplied sources.; The proposed fix is explicitly untested.; No workaround is supported by the sources.

Preserve explicit MCP `additionalProperties`; open PR #22767 carries a tested patch
Public sources: https://github.com/vercel/ai/issues/22636 , https://github.com/vercel/ai/pull/22767 , and fix commit https://github.com/vercel/ai/commit/5408ee7d6b60478d03723d5dd45d0fe3c138db66 . The issue's contributor automation reproduced the defect. PR #22767 changes `packages/mcp/src/tool/mcp-client.ts` from an unconditional `additionalProperties: false` to `inputSchema.additionalProperties ?? false`, adds an `@ai-sdk/mcp` patch changeset, and reports an end-to-end reproduction replay succeeding with the patch. At retrieval on 2026-10-11 the PR is still open, so this is not a merged or released fix.

- Proposed action
- If you must patch an affected `@ai-sdk/mcp` checkout before an official release, change automatic tool conversion so `additionalProperties` preserves an explicit server value and only defaults to `false` when the field is omitted: `additionalProperties: inputSchema.additionalProperties ?? false`. Re-run your generated-schema validation after applying the patch.
- Applicability
- State
- partial
- Text
- Affected automatic MCP tool conversion such as `@ai-sdk/mcp@2.0.73` / reported upstream where the MCP server explicitly supplies `additionalProperties: true` or a schema object and `toolsFromDefinitions` overwrites it.
- Limitations
- State
- partial
- Text
- This is an open-PR/source-checkout patch, not a released package fix and not reproduced by KFA. Do not claim a fixed package version until the PR merges and a release containing it is identified. Provider-specific strict-schema restrictions may still reject permissive schemas even after this conversion bug is patched.
