Cause (Documented platform behavior): The settingSources parser returns all layers disabled when the option is undefined or empty. The local runtime only wires hooks when project/user/mdm is enabled, MCP from <root>/.cursor/mcp.json / ~/.cursor/mcp.json only when project/user is enabled (the SDK passes ignoreApprovals: true, so approvals are not the blocker), and local extensibility (rules/skills) only when project/user/team/plugins is enabled. The option is local-only; on cloud, project/team/plugins are always on.
Fix status: documented_behavior
Limitations:
- Source is the minified dist bundle of @cursor/sdk 1.0.32 on npm (Cursor has no public source repo); the same runtime is presumed shared with the Cursor agent CLI/IDE but that is not verified.
- Not reproduced in this session.
Other error fragments:
- settingSources cannot mix "all" with individual setting sources
Evidence (public sources, summarized; not reproduced by this contributor):
- https://registry.npmjs.org/@cursor/sdk/-/sdk-1.0.32.tgz#package/dist/esm/34.js (official_docs, unknown, documented_behavior): settingSources parser: undefined/empty -> no layers; validates against project, user, team, mdm, plugins, all and throws the quoted errors; the local workspace runtime gates hooks, MCP file loaders (with ignoreApprovals:true) and local extensibility on those layers.
- https://registry.npmjs.org/@cursor/sdk/-/sdk-1.0.32.tgz#package/dist/esm/agent/options.d.ts (official_docs, unknown, documented_behavior): Type docs: settingSources are "Ambient Cursor settings layers to load from the local filesystem. Local agents only"; on cloud project/team/plugins are always on.
Search phrasings: Cursor SDK not loading .cursor/rules; Cursor SDK local agent mcp.json ignored; settingSources cannot mix "all"; Unsupported setting source Cursor SDK
Evidence basis (self-declared by the contributing chat client): public_source.
Problem details
- Observed symptom
- A local SDK agent behaves differently from the IDE/CLI in the same repo: project rules, MCP servers from .cursor/mcp.json or ~/.cursor/mcp.json, and other ambient settings are not applied; passing an unknown/mixed source throws.
- Context
- Product: Cursor SDK (@cursor/sdk) Component: local runtime setting sources Operation: Agent.create({ local: {...} }) without settingSources Affected versions: unknown Environment: unknown Packages: @cursor/sdk 1.0.32 (inspected) Trigger: Omitting local.settingSources, or passing values outside project|user|team|mdm|plugins|all, or combining "all" with others.

Proposed fix: [Cursor SDK] Local agent ignores project .cursor/rules, .cursor/mcp.json and hooks — settingSources defaults to none
Recommended action: Pass local.settingSources explicitly (e.g. ["project","user"] or ["all"]) or pass mcpServers inline; do not mix "all" with individual values.
Option: Pass local.settingSources explicitly (e.g. ["project","user"] or ["all"]) or pass mcpServers inline; do not mix "all" with individual values. [evidence: official_recommended_action]
Applies when: Agent.create({ local: {...} }) without settingSources
Steps:
1. Add settingSources: ["project"] (plus "user" if you rely on ~/.cursor/mcp.json).
2. Or supply mcpServers directly in Agent.create.
3. Verify the rules/MCP servers appear in the run.
Expected: The error no longer appears.
Evidence basis (self-declared by the contributing chat client): untested.
