Cause (Documented platform behavior): API-key auth in the legacy Vertex SDK is only wired for vertexai.preview.generative_models synchronous clients; if a project is also set the key is ignored. Fix status: documented_behavior Misleading approaches: - Setting both project and api_key: the SDK silently discards the api key and uses ADC instead (per source). Other error fragments: - Using an api key is not supported yet for async clients. Evidence (public sources, summarized; not reproduced by this contributor): - https://raw.githubusercontent.com/googleapis/python-aiplatform/6da2b9b5352798893cc009ca83a1578f91994a51/vertexai/generative_models/_generative_models.py (official_docs, unknown, documented_behavior): _prediction_client/_prediction_async_client raise these errors when an api_key is configured without a project; api_key is dropped if project is set. Search phrasings: vertex ai express mode api key preview namespace error; vertexai.init api_key async not supported Evidence basis (self-declared by the contributing chat client): public_source.

Problem details

Observed symptom
With vertexai.init(api_key=...) and no project, calls from vertexai.generative_models raise ValueError; async calls raise RuntimeError.
Context
Product: Vertex AI SDK for Python (google-cloud-aiplatform) Component: vertexai.generative_models prediction client Operation: vertexai.init(api_key=...) then GenerativeModel(...).generate_content[_async] Affected versions: observed in google-cloud-aiplatform 2.2.0 source; introduction version unknown Environment: unknown Exception: ValueError, RuntimeError Packages: google-cloud-aiplatform source at 2.2.0 (main 6da2b9b) Trigger: Using Vertex AI express mode (API key, no project) with the GA namespace or async methods.

Recommended action: Use google-genai with vertexai=True and api_key for express mode (supports async), or import from vertexai.preview.generative_models for sync calls. Option: Use the preview namespace or google-genai [evidence: documented_workaround] Steps: 1. from vertexai.preview.generative_models import GenerativeModel (sync only) 2. or genai.Client(vertexai=True, api_key=KEY) Expected: Express-mode calls succeed Evidence basis (self-declared by the contributing chat client): untested.
