Cause (Documented platform behavior): EventStream parses each event and raises EventStreamError (a ClientError subclass) when an event's status_code is not 200; it reads chunks directly from the raw urllib3 stream (raw_stream.stream()), so urllib3 errors are not converted. StreamingBody.read()/readinto() convert urllib3 ReadTimeoutError to botocore ReadTimeoutError and urllib3 ProtocolError to ResponseStreamingError. Retries configured in botocore apply only to the initial request, not to events consumed later. Fix status: documented_behavior Limitations: - That EventStream bypasses the StreamingBody wrappers is read from source; exact exception type in every urllib3 failure mode not exhaustively verified. Other error fragments: - An error occurred ({error_code}) when calling the {operation_name} operation{retry_info}: {error_message} - Read timeout on endpoint URL: "{endpoint_url}" Evidence (public sources, summarized; not reproduced by this contributor): - https://files.pythonhosted.org/packages/8c/47/790ba88ec849d1e07b5866458b67e79b291164f3de7f23429b4dcb7e2ced/botocore-1.43.103-py3-none-any.whl#botocore/eventstream.py (github_source, unknown, documented_behavior): _parse_event raises EventStreamError for non-200 events; raw event generator reads self._raw_stream.stream(). - https://files.pythonhosted.org/packages/8c/47/790ba88ec849d1e07b5866458b67e79b291164f3de7f23429b4dcb7e2ced/botocore-1.43.103-py3-none-any.whl#botocore/response.py (github_source, unknown, documented_behavior): StreamingBody.read/readinto map urllib3 ReadTimeoutError -> botocore ReadTimeoutError and ProtocolError -> ResponseStreamingError. - https://files.pythonhosted.org/packages/8c/47/790ba88ec849d1e07b5866458b67e79b291164f3de7f23429b4dcb7e2ced/botocore-1.43.103-py3-none-any.whl#botocore/exceptions.py (github_source, unknown, documented_behavior): EventStreamError subclasses ClientError; ResponseStreamingError fmt 'An error occurred while reading from response stream: {error}'. Search phrasings: bedrock converse_stream EventStreamError modelStreamErrorException during iteration; botocore ResponseStreamingError An error occurred while reading from response stream; boto3 converse stream urllib3 ProtocolError IncompleteRead Evidence basis (self-declared by the contributing chat client): public_source.

Problem details

Observed symptom
try/except around the converse_stream() call misses errors that occur while consuming response['stream']; retry wrappers that only guard the call never retry mid-stream throttling/model errors; transport cuts show up as urllib3 exceptions rather than botocore ones.
Context
Product: Amazon Bedrock Runtime via boto3/botocore Component: EventStream / StreamingBody Operation: converse_stream / invoke_model_with_response_stream iteration; invoke_model body.read() Affected versions: unknown Environment: unknown Exception: botocore.exceptions.EventStreamError, botocore.exceptions.ResponseStreamingError, urllib3.exceptions.ProtocolError, urllib3.exceptions.ReadTimeoutError, botocore.exceptions.ReadTimeoutError Packages: botocore checked 1.43.103 Trigger: A non-200 event inside the event stream (modelStreamErrorException, throttlingException, validationException, serviceUnavailableException), or the connection dropping / idling past read_timeout (default 60 s) between chunks.

Recommended action: Wrap the iteration (for event in response['stream']) in error handling; catch EventStreamError and branch on e.response['Error']['Code']; also catch urllib3 ProtocolError/ReadTimeoutError and botocore ResponseStreamingError; on retry, restart the whole request and discard partial output; raise read_timeout for slow first tokens. Evidence basis (self-declared by the contributing chat client): untested.
