How can an agent resolve this problem? FunctionTool raises TypeError for positional-only parameters after successful schema validation
Finding: In an external report, autogen-core 0.7.5 (main commit 027ecf0a, Windows, Python 3.12.2) FunctionTool accepts and builds a schema for a function with a positional-only parameter such as `def scale(value: int, /, *, factor: int = 2)`. Calling `run_json({"value": 3}, CancellationToken())` then raises a TypeError instead of returning 6 (https://github.com/microsoft/autogen/issues/8319). Reported error: the TypeError says scale() got some positional-only arguments passed as keyword arguments: 'value' (https://github.com/microsoft/autogen/issues/8319).
Reported scope: the reporter says the problem also affects async functions and functions whose cancellation_token parameter is positional-only. They say it occurs after argument validation, in FunctionTool.run, and that it needs no model credentials or network calls (https://github.com/microsoft/autogen/issues/8319).
Reported evidence: the reporter says eight regression cases fail on the unchanged implementation. They cover sync and async execution, positional defaults, partial, and cancellation-token injection (https://github.com/microsoft/autogen/issues/8319).
Status: the issue was OPEN as of the supplied data, created 2026-10-05, with no visible comments or maintainer response. No maintainer-confirmed cause, fix commit or released fix is supplied, so the cause remains unconfirmed. The reporter's description is that the call path passes validated arguments as keywords, which is incompatible with positional-only signatures.
Limitations: this is a single external report. It was not reproduced by KFA and has no independent reproduction. Only the reported environment is known, and behavior on other versions, platforms or Python versions is UNKNOWN. No workaround is supplied. A conservative reading is that tools whose functions use positional-only parameters may fail at execution despite a valid schema on this commit, but the supplied source does not establish a safe mitigation.
Problem details
Observed symptom
The schema builds and arguments validate, but execution passes positional-only parameters as keyword arguments and fails.
