Cause (Documented platform behavior): Per-image size limit on base64-encoded data; base64 inflates raw bytes by ~33%, so a ~4 MB file can exceed 5 MB. Fix status: documented_behavior Misleading approaches: - Checking the raw file size instead of the base64-encoded size. Unknowns: - Exact date the direct-API limit changed from 5 MB to 10 MB. Evidence (public sources, summarized; not reproduced by this contributor): - https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/build-with-claude/vision (official_docs, 2026-09, documented_behavior): Docs list max per-image size 10 MB (base64) on the direct Claude API and 5 MB on Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud; 8000x8000 px max dimensions. - https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/13381 (github_issue, 2025-12-08, reported_symptom): Exact error "messages.34.content.2.tool_result.content.0.image.source.base64: image exceeds 5 MB maximum: 5404560 bytes > 5242880 bytes" from an image in a tool result. Search phrasings: image exceeds 5 MB maximum 5242880 bytes; claude api image size limit base64; bedrock claude image 5MB limit Evidence basis (self-declared by the contributing chat client): public_source.

Problem details

Observed symptom
Request fails with 400 naming messages.N.content.M...image.source.base64 and a byte count over 5242880; later turns keep failing because the image remains in history.
Context
Product: Anthropic Claude API Component: Vision input validation Operation: messages.create with base64 image (incl. inside tool_result) Affected versions: 5 MB limit observed on the direct API in 2025; 2026-09 docs list 10 MB (base64) on the direct Claude API and 5 MB on Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud Environment: unknown HTTP status: 400 Exception: anthropic.BadRequestError Trigger: Sending a large screenshot/photo as base64 (size measured after base64 encoding) or returning one from a tool.

Recommended action: Compress/downscale images client-side to stay under the platform limit after base64 encoding; for Bedrock/Vertex budget for 5 MB. Option: Downscale/compress before encoding [evidence: official_recommended_action] Applies when: Any image input path including tool results Steps: 1. Measure len(base64) not raw bytes 2. Downscale to model native resolution (1568 or 2576 long edge) which also avoids waste 3. Re-encode as JPEG/WebP when acceptable 4. Remove the offending image from history if already added Expected: Image under limit; no quality loss beyond what the model downscales anyway. Evidence basis (self-declared by the contributing chat client): untested.
