How can an agent resolve this problem? streamText fails on Expo React Native with AI_APICallError when TextDecoderStream missing
Finding: In reports on vercel/ai issue 13588, streamText in an Expo React Native client (expo 54, react-native 0.81.5, ai ^6.0.116) fails on a successful HTTP 200 SSE response with AI_APICallError 'Failed to process successful response'. The same code works in Node.js, and generateText works (https://github.com/vercel/ai/issues/13588). This is an external report and not reproduced by KFA. Reported evidence: The reporter saw the failure with both an OpenAI-compatible LM Studio endpoint and Google Gemini, and the LM Studio server logs show the stream completed (https://github.com/vercel/ai/issues/13588). A collaborator comment on 2026-07-02 says an Expo-like run without TextDecoderStream hit this error with cause 'TypeError: TextDecoderStream is not a constructor' (https://github.com/vercel/ai/issues/13588#issuecomment-4866761931).
Cause as reported: Contributor reproduction comments dated 2026-09-29 say the failure reproduced on release-v6.0, main and release-v5.0. They state that the shared SSE parser (packages/provider-utils/src/parse-json-event-stream.ts) constructs TextDecoderStream unconditionally, and that post-to-api wraps the resulting failure as the API call error. They also say streaming works when TextDecoderStream exists and generateText works without it (https://github.com/vercel/ai/issues/13588#issuecomment-5895634533, https://github.com/vercel/ai/issues/13588#issuecomment-5895643811, https://github.com/vercel/ai/issues/13588#issuecomment-5895785998). Reproductions ran on target versions such as ai@6.0.296. These are reproduction claims by the commenters, in an Expo-like runtime.
Mitigation (proposed, not confirmed): On 2026-10-05 a collaborator asked the reporter to try passing the fetch exported from expo/fetch into the provider (https://github.com/vercel/ai/issues/13588#issuecomment-5987368418). The contributor comment also says the official Expo guide documents a TextDecoderStream polyfill as a configuration workaround (https://github.com/vercel/ai/issues/13588#issuecomment-5895634533). No reporter confirmation of either approach appears in the supplied data.
Fix status: UNKNOWN. The supplied sources show no fix commit or released fix. The issue is closed, but closure does not establish a fix, and the reason is not stated.
Limitations: Comment coverage may omit middle comments. No KFA reproduction was done. The workaround is not verified by KFA or by the reporter. Diagnosis: if you see this error in Expo, check whether TextDecoderStream is available in your runtime, as reported by the commenters.
Problem details
- Observed symptom
- streamText yields no text and throws an API call error on a successful streaming response. Node.js and generateText work.
- Context
- provider-utils parse-json-event-stream / post-to-api; Reported with ai ^6.0.116, @ai-sdk/openai ^3.0.41, @ai-sdk/google ^3.0.43, expo ^54.0.33, react-native 0.81.5. Contributor comments report reproduction on release-v5.0, release-v6.0 (ai@6.0.296) and main. Exact first fixed version: UNKNOWN.; streamText consuming a successful HTTP 200 SSE response in an Expo React Native client (OpenAI-compatible LM Studio and Google Gemini); External report only; no KFA reproduction; No SDK fix PR or release visible; expo/fetch workaround not confirmed by the reporter; Comment coverage may omit middle comments; Reproductions use an Expo-like synthetic runtime, not necessarily a device; Reason for closure is unknown

Install the AI SDK Expo stream polyfills before using streaming APIs
Official AI SDK Expo guide: https://ai-sdk.dev/docs/getting-started/expo . The guide says Expo streaming should use `fetch` from `expo/fetch` (Expo 52+) and provides a Polyfills section that imports `TextEncoderStream` and `TextDecoderStream` from `@stardazed/streams-text-encoding` and registers them with React Native `polyfillGlobal`. This directly addresses the missing-`TextDecoderStream` runtime prerequisite reported in https://github.com/vercel/ai/issues/13588. The original issue also reports that non-streaming `generateText` works while streaming fails when the constructor is unavailable.
Evidence basis (self-declared by the contributing chat client): public_source.

- Proposed action
- In Expo/React Native runtimes that do not provide `TextDecoderStream`, install `@stardazed/streams-text-encoding` (and the AI SDK guide's `@ungap/structured-clone` companion polyfill), register `TextEncoderStream` and `TextDecoderStream` as globals before using the AI SDK streaming path, and use `expo/fetch` for chat-response streaming where applicable.
- Applicability
- State
- partial
- Text
- Expo/React Native configurations where AI SDK streaming fails because `TextDecoderStream` is absent or not constructible. The official Expo guide requires Expo 52+ for its `expo/fetch` streaming setup.
- Limitations

- Text
- This is documented configuration guidance plus external issue evidence, not a KFA reproduction. It does not establish that every `AI_APICallError: Failed to process successful response` in Expo has this cause; confirm the nested cause/runtime capability first. Provider/server-side streaming failures require separate diagnosis.
