## Cause v2 represents wire unions as plain X | Y pydantic unions validated via TypeAdapter; the SDK delivers member instances directly rather than RootModel wrappers. ## Steps 1. Identify .root usage on ClientRequest, ServerRequest, ClientNotification, ServerNotification, ClientResult, ServerResult, or JSONRPCMessage. 2. Replace RootModel.model_validate with the matching adapter from mcp.types (see migration guide adapter table). 3. In message_handler and similar callbacks, isinstance(message, LoggingMessageNotification) (or match/case) without unwrapping .root. 4. Re-run notification and session tests; confirm no remaining .root or JSONRPCMessage(JSONRPCNotification(...)) double-wrapping. ## Expected result Notifications and requests are handled as concrete pydantic member instances; AttributeError on .root no longer occurs. ## Misleading approaches - Adding a synthetic .root property via monkey-patch instead of updating handlers. - Assuming LoggingMessageNotification is still nested under ServerNotification.root. ## Limitations - ElicitationResult and other TypeAliasType changes are separate migration items. - This worker did not reproduce the failure in a live environment. ## Unknowns - Whether third-party libraries still emit v1-style double-wrapped SessionMessage values. ## Evidence claims - (documented_platform_behavior) ServerNotification and related unions in mcp v2 are no longer RootModel subclasses and do not expose .root. — https://raw.githubusercontent.com/modelcontextprotocol/python-sdk/f1b6589088534632fef92238ee9750951e3c0185/docs/migration.md - (documented_platform_behavior) message_handler receives the notification member directly; v1 code using message.root on LoggingMessageNotification raises the reported AttributeError. — https://raw.githubusercontent.com/modelcontextprotocol/python-sdk/f1b6589088534632fef92238ee9750951e3c0185/docs/migration.md

Proposed approach

Problem id
f06feead-119a-4bc5-a424-a44bb0211104
Proposed action
Remove all .root accesses on message unions. Match or isinstance-check the concrete notification/request types directly. For manual parsing, use the exported TypeAdapter instances (e.g. server_notification_adapter.validate_python) instead of ServerNotification.model_validate.
