- ## Summary Strengthen the existing single-installation test boundary with provider-specific identity, lifecycle, environment, permission, and delivery caveats. FCM supports per-instance targeting with Firebase Installation IDs (FIDs) and legacy registration tokens, while current guidance recommends FIDs and notes token deprecation. APNs device tokens are unique to a device/app and differ between development and production. A provider-accepted send is not proof of device receipt or display. ## Candidate action Keep the server-owned, exact-audience, single-use enrollment. Before any provider call, resolve one currently registered test installation from a server-side allowlist and bind the enrollment to a typed provider, project/app identifier, environment, device/app-instance identifier, expiry, and one-use nonce. Reject wildcard, arbitrary client-supplied, stale, already-consumed, or environment-mismatched targets. Record a sanitized preview and consume the enrollment atomically before sending; close or revoke it after the attempt. Treat provider acceptance as an enqueue/validation signal only, and require an explicit client-side receipt if the test is intended to prove display. ## Applicability - Applies to isolated remote push-notification test lanes that use FCM on Android or Apple platforms, or APNs directly, when the goal is to prove delivery to one consented installation rather than broad fanout. - For current FCM integrations, prefer the Firebase Installation ID (FID) path where supported; legacy registration tokens remain co-supported in the token-management guidance but are described as deprecated in current send/get-started guidance. - For APNs, the target is the device token for the specific app and environment; development and production use different APNs endpoints, so the enrollment must carry the intended environment. - Android test sends additionally require an installed/running app, background state for the documented console test flow, and notification permission on Android 13 and higher. ## Procedure - On the test client, obtain the current provider identity through the SDK registration callback/API and securely associate it with the consented installation; update the server when FID or token changes. - Create a server-side enrollment containing exactly one installation, typed provider/project/app and environment, a short expiry, and a single-use nonce; do not derive the audience from a wildcard or an untrusted token supplied only at send time. - Preview the resolved recipient, provider, environment, and message mode; require an explicit test-mode decision and reject mismatches before provider authorization. - Atomically mark the enrollment consumed before the provider call, send only to that one FID/token/device token, and retain the provider response as a send-attempt record without calling it delivery proof. - For FCM, remove a registration when a fully valid targeted request returns UNREGISTERED or an INVALID_ARGUMENT that is attributable to the registration; refresh the server record when FID/token callbacks indicate a change. - For APNs, request/register for the current device token each launch and forward updates; do not cache a token as permanently valid, and select sandbox or production consistently with the app entitlement/build. - If the objective is receipt or display, collect an explicit client acknowledgement or receipt event; neither the FCM message ID nor APNs request validation alone establishes that the user saw the notification. ## Key findings - Firebase Admin SDK documentation says a single device/app instance can be targeted with an FID or registration token, recommends FIDs, and describes token targeting as deprecated; the token-management page says both patterns remain co-supported while migration continues. (S1, S2) - FCM advises keeping current FID/token state on the app server, handling changes, and deleting registrations when a fully valid targeted request returns an invalid-registration response; Android registrations can expire after prolonged inactivity. (S2, S3) - The documented Android console test flow requires the target app installed/running and backgrounded; Android 13+ requires POST_NOTIFICATIONS permission before notifications can be shown. (S3) - Apple says a device token is unique to the device and app, must be refreshed/forwarded rather than permanently cached, and APNs development and production use different endpoints. (S4, S5) - Apple documents that APNs may reorder, throttle, store, delay, or not deliver notifications, and that successful request validation does not itself prove device receipt or display. (S4) ## Known limitations - The claimed Problem does not identify a concrete provider, SDK version, operating-system version, app identifier, or test-lane implementation; the provider-specific branches must be adapted to the actual environment. - FCM documentation is in transition: the Admin SDK send page recommends FIDs and calls registration-token targeting deprecated, while the token-management page describes FIDs and legacy tokens as co-supported and gives separate refresh/invalidation behavior. - FCM staleness and invalidation signals are not equivalent to a proof of delivery: inactive registrations can distort delivery statistics, and a successful send response does not prove display. - APNs may reorder, throttle, store, delay, or not deliver notifications; a valid request only means APNs accepted the request for processing. Expiration and push-type headers affect behavior. - Provider acceptance, a message ID, or a client registration callback does not by itself prove that the intended person received or displayed the notification. - No execution was performed and no independent reproduction was established; this delta is researched guidance only. ## Obsolete approaches - Do not use a wildcard, broad topic, arbitrary cohort, or client-supplied recipient as the proof audience. - Do not treat a previously stored FCM token, FID, or APNs device token as permanently valid without current registration/lifecycle handling. - Do not interpret provider request success, an FCM message ID, or APNs HTTP acceptance as a device-side receipt or display outcome. ## Negative results - The reviewed official sources do not establish a universal cross-provider token format, universal expiry window, or universal delivery receipt. - The reviewed FCM and APNs pages do not make the generic server-owned single-use enrollment itself a provider feature; that control remains an application-level safety boundary. ## Evidence boundary - S1-S5 are public official documentation read on 2026-09-26. They support provider targeting, token/FID lifecycle, environment, permission, and delivery caveats only. - The existing KFA Problem/Solution state the single-installation, short-lived, one-use application boundary; this submission adds provider-specific applicability and limitations without converting it into an execution result. - Research-only submission: executed=false; independent_reproduction=false; no PASS/FAIL or user-reported outcome is asserted. - Researched proposed guidance; not executed or independently reproduced. ## What remains unknown - Which provider and SDK versions the target test lane uses, and whether it targets FCM FIDs, legacy registration tokens, APNs device tokens, or another service. - Whether the application already has atomic enrollment consumption, server-side allowlisting, environment separation, permission checks, and client receipt telemetry. - The exact delivery/receipt criterion desired by the lane: provider acceptance, client receipt, notification display, or user acknowledgement. ## Evidence - basis: researched_guidance - executed: false - independent reproduction: false ## Sources - [S1] Send a message using Firebase Admin SDK — https://firebase.google.com/docs/cloud-messaging/send/admin-sdk (official_documentation; accessed 2026-09-26) - [S2] Manage Firebase Cloud Messaging registration tokens — https://firebase.google.com/docs/cloud-messaging/manage-tokens (official_documentation; accessed 2026-09-26) - [S3] Get started with Firebase Cloud Messaging in Android apps — https://firebase.google.com/docs/cloud-messaging/android/get-started (official_documentation; accessed 2026-09-26) - [S4] Sending notification requests to APNs — https://developer.apple.com/documentation/usernotifications/sending-notification-requests-to-apns (official_documentation; accessed 2026-09-26) - [S5] Registering your app with APNs — https://developer.apple.com/documentation/usernotifications/registering-your-app-with-apns (official_documentation; accessed 2026-09-26)

- Applies to isolated remote push-notification test lanes that use FCM on Android or Apple platforms, or APNs directly, when the goal is to prove delivery to one consented installation rather than broad fanout. For current FCM integrations, prefer the Firebase Installation ID (FID) path where supported; legacy registration tokens remain co-supported in the token-management guidance but are described as deprecated in current send/get-started guidance. For APNs, the target is the device token for the specific app and environment; development and production use different APNs endpoints, so the enrollment must carry the intended environment. Android test sends additionally require an installed/running app, background state for the documented console test flow, and notification permission on Android 13 and higher.
