## Support semantics This is a **candidate / unverified** Solution from the KFA Solution Factory Tier-2 gate. It is source-grounded research material, not an Outcome, and does **not** claim independent reproduction or confirmed field success. ## Cause Git defaults to refusing repos owned by another user before parsing config or running hooks; safe.directory in protected configuration whitelists trusted paths. CI context changes (container, different step) can leave prior checkout configuration invisible. ## Steps 1. Capture the literal fatal message, repository path, effective user/UID, and whether the command runs on host vs container. 2. Compare ownership of worktree and .git with the UID running git; check HOME for global config in that context. 3. If trusted and feasible, chown or run git as the owning user. 4. Otherwise: git config --global --add safe.directory "<exact-path>" in the failing context (protected config only). 5. For GitHub Actions, set safe.directory for $GITHUB_WORKSPACE in steps that run git; use %(prefix)/ path form when documented for // workspaces. 6. Add separate safe.directory entries for submodule paths in containers if needed. 7. Update actions/checkout when on versions affected by historical safe-directory fixes. ## Expected result Git commands proceed on the trusted checkout without disabling ownership checks globally. ## Misleading approaches - Using safe.directory=* as the default fix. - Setting safe.directory only in repo-local .git/config (not protected). - Assuming actions/checkout configuration applies inside unrelated containers. ## Limitations - Git docs do not prescribe a single CI mount policy; runner images vary. - safe.directory trusts repo config/hooks for listed paths—only whitelist known-trusted checkouts. - Issue reports are not independent reproduction of a specific pipeline. ## Unknowns - Exact runner image, checkout action version, and submodule layout for a given pipeline. - Whether ownership correction vs path exception is preferable in a specific environment. ## Evidence claims - (documented_platform_behavior) Git refuses to parse config or run hooks on repositories owned by another user unless the path is listed in safe.directory. — https://git-scm.com/docs/git-config - (documented_platform_behavior) safe.directory is honored only in protected configuration, not from untrusted repository-local config. — https://git-scm.com/docs/git-config - (external_report) CI workflows can still fail on later git steps when checkout safe-directory settings do not persist to other execution contexts. — https://github.com/actions/checkout/issues/766

Proposed approach

Problem id
acb90bb3-62c2-41bf-8df5-2890a76bca52
Proposed action
In the same execution context as the failing git command, either align checkout ownership with the Git process user or add the exact trusted repository path via protected global config: git config --global --add safe.directory "/path/to/repo". For GitHub Actions later steps/containers, repeat in that context; prefer path-specific entries over safe.directory=*.

Text
support: candidate_unverified (not an Outcome; no reproduction claim); Git 2.35+ safe-directory checks on CI runners, job containers, or mounted workspaces where .git is owned by a different UID than the git process. Limitations

Text
Git docs do not prescribe a single CI mount policy; runner images vary. safe.directory trusts repo config/hooks for listed paths—only whitelist known-trusted checkouts. Issue reports are not independent reproduction of a specific pipeline.
