How can an agent resolve this problem? gcs-endpoint: unparseable GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS silently falls back to VM metadata identity

Finding: In one external report on uv 0.12.23 (x86_64-unknown-linux-musl, Docker debian:trixie on GKE-based CI runners, Python 3.11), uv sync with UV_GCS_ENDPOINT_URL pointed at Google Artifact Registry and GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS set to a workload identity federation (external_account) config failed with 403 Forbidden when downloading wheels ([issue](https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/issues/22273)). Reported diagnosis: The reporter says the cause was visible only with RUST_LOG=reqsign_core=debug. reqsign-google reportedly could not parse the credential file, logging 'data did not match any variant of untagged enum Source', because credential_source.format was missing. It then reportedly fell back to the GCE metadata server and signed requests as the node's default service account, which would explain the 403 ([issue](https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/issues/22273)). The reporter links an upstream reqsign issue, but its content was not supplied here, so the dependency-side cause is unverified. Observability gap: According to the report, default verbosity and even -v give no hint that the configured credentials were ignored. The reporter requests that uv fail or at least warn when GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS is set but cannot be loaded, and that reqsign credential-loading warnings be included in -v output ([issue](https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/issues/22273)). Diagnostic hint (report-derived): If a GCS-endpoint uv sync returns 403 while an external_account credential file is configured, check whether the credential is actually being loaded, for example by running with RUST_LOG=reqsign_core=debug as the reporter did, and look for the parse error above. Also consider whether requests are being signed as a different identity such as the VM default service account. Workaround (reporter-stated, not verified): The reporter says adding "format": {"type": "text"} to credential_source in the credential config avoids the problem ([issue](https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/issues/22273)). No one else has confirmed this. Status: The issue was open on 2026-10-07 with no comments, no maintainer response, and no linked uv fix or release in the supplied data. Closure or fix status is unknown. Limitations: This is a single external report. It was not reproduced by KFA, and there is no independent reproduction. Behavior on other uv versions or other credential types is unknown.

Problem details

Observed symptom
uv sync fails with 403 Forbidden downloading wheels. The reporter says the credential file could not be parsed, and uv then fell back to the GCE metadata server identity (node default service account) with no visible warning at default verbosity or -v.
Context
GCS endpoint auth via reqsign (reqsign-google credential loading); uv 0.12.23 (x86_64-unknown-linux-musl), Linux x86_64 Docker debian:trixie on GKE-based CI runners, Python 3.11; uv sync with UV_GCS_ENDPOINT_URL pointing at Google Artifact Registry and GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS set to an external_account (workload identity federation) config; Single external report; no comments, no independent reproduction, no KFA reproduction.; Root cause is attributed to the upstream reqsign dependency by the reporter; the upstream issue content was not supplied.; The parse error appears only with RUST_LOG=reqsign_core=debug.; Workaround is reporter-claimed, with no independent success confirmation.; Only version 0.12.23 is reported; other versions are unknown.; The silent-fallback behavior is a feature request/diagnostic gap, not maintainer-confirmed design.

Reporter-listed workaround: add format to external_account credential_source

Source-backed, not verified by KFA. In the external report on uv 0.12.23, the reporter says reqsign-google could not parse the external_account config (error: data did not match any variant of untagged enum Source) because credential_source.format was missing. The reporter lists adding "format": {"type": "text"} to credential_source as a workaround (https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/issues/22273). The issue includes no confirmation that the workaround succeeded. To diagnose, the reporter used RUST_LOG=reqsign_core=debug to surface the parse error. The workaround is unconfirmed by maintainers or independent users. The source does not state which credential_source type the reporter used and gives no format guidance for other source types, so whether the workaround suits other types is unknown. In the supplied data (issue created 2026-10-07, no comments), no maintainer response and no uv fix or release is cited.

Proposed action
Source-backed, not verified by KFA: if the external_account credential_source lacks a format field and uv hits the parse error, the reporter lists adding "format": {"type": "text"} to credential_source as a workaround. The source gives no success confirmation. Edit a copy of the config and retest.
