How can an agent resolve this problem? [BUG] Auto-compaction fires at 281K–845K tokens on 2.1.296 for claude-opus-5-5 (documented default ~967K)

Finding: One reporter says that after updating to Claude Code 2.1.296 on 2026-10-10 (macOS, terminal, claude.ai login, model claude-opus-5-5), auto-compaction fired well below the documented default of roughly 967K tokens for native 1M-window models. This is an external report and was not reproduced by KFA. Source: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/101067 Reported data: From local compact_boundary transcript records, the reporter lists 47 auto-compactions on 2.1.294 and earlier (2026-09-12 to 2026-10-10 09:35 UTC) with preTokens of about 966K-981K. On 2.1.296 (2026-10-10 10:21-14:52 UTC) there were 8 auto-compactions at 281,107, 283,004, 327,396, 337,609, 393,350, 424,831, 531,500 and 844,686 tokens. All were trigger auto. Source: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/101067 The trigger point is not a single lower fixed window: one 2.1.296 session reportedly compacted at 283K, 532K and 425K, while another reached 373K without compacting. Each compaction reportedly took 50-83 seconds, leaving 19K-42K postTokens. Source: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/101067 Configuration ruled out by the reporter: no autoCompactWindow in any settings file (top-level or modelSettings), no managed settings, CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_COMPACT_WINDOW, CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_1M_CONTEXT, CLAUDE_CODE_MAX_CONTEXT_TOKENS and ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL unset, no --autocompact flag, permission mode auto. A follow-up comment says the /autocompact dialog shows the 1m-token default for Opus 5.5 with window set to auto, so the effective threshold should be near 1M. Source: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/101067#issuecomment-6098897085 Status: The issue is open and labeled regression and has repro, but the supplied thread contains no maintainer response, confirmed cause, workaround, fix commit or released fix. The reporter's regression framing is a correlation with the version update, not a confirmed cause. Closure or labels would not prove a fix. Diagnostic value: If you see early auto-compaction on 2.1.296 with opus 5.5, you can compare the compact_boundary preTokens in your local transcripts against the reported 281K-845K range and check that no auto-compact window setting or environment override is set, as the reporter did. These checks only help separate configuration from a possible version issue; they are not a verified fix. Limitations: single reporter, no independent reproduction, no KFA reproduction, platform and model coverage limited to the reported setup, root cause unknown.

Problem details

Observed symptom
Auto-compaction triggers at irregular points between about 281K and 845K tokens instead of the documented default of about 967K for native 1M-window models.
Context
auto-compaction threshold; 2.1.296 (reported); earlier 2.1.294 and prior reportedly compacted near 966K-981K; Long interactive sessions on claude-opus-5-5 in terminal on macOS with claude.ai login; Single-reporter data set derived from local transcripts; not independently reproduced.; No KFA reproduction was performed.; Root cause is unknown; no maintainer analysis supplied.; Only macOS, terminal, claude.ai login and claude-opus-5-5 were reported; other platforms and models are untested.; Reporter-quoted documentation text and dialog output were not checked against the docs by KFA.; No workaround or fix is supported by the sources.

Check early auto-compactions for the idle-compaction notice before treating them as a lowered threshold

Finding: If an early auto-compaction on Claude Code 2.1.296 sits next to the transcript notice about compacting while idle before the prompt cache expired, it may be idle compaction rather than a lowered threshold. This is external user reporting, not maintainer-confirmed and not reproduced by KFA. A commenter on https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/101067#issuecomment-6101579627 reports 7 auto compactions at 228K-755K on Windows 11, each with that notice and recorded as trigger auto, so preTokens alone looks like an early threshold. The same commenter infers, hedged, that it needs a conversation of at least 200K tokens, about 54 minutes idle, and auto-compact on. Issue https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/101070 separately reports on macOS with Opus 5.5 two idle compactions at 207,910 and 225,866 tokens (600K window), recorded as trigger auto about 54 minutes after the last response, each followed by the idle notice. Suggested check: search your transcripts for that notice beside each compact_boundary; compactions without it are not explained by this. Unverified workaround: the first commenter says adding "idleCompaction": false to settings.json (user or project) stops idle compaction and leaves near-limit compaction unaffected. Limitations: the original reporter (https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/101067#issuecomment-6098897085) has not said whether their 8 compactions carry the notice; no maintainer response, fix or release is identified; the setting reportedly is undocumented and was not checked by KFA.

Proposed action
For each early compact_boundary, look in the transcript for the idle notice. If present, that compaction is likely idle compaction recorded as trigger auto. A user reports that idleCompaction false in settings.json stops it; this is unverified.

Text
Idle compaction is an external hypothesis for the original reporter's case; the marker is not confirmed on their 8 compactions.; idleCompaction false is unverified and the setting reportedly is undocumented.; No maintainer response, fix PR, merged fix or release identified.; The 54-minute and 200K conditions are a commenter's inference.; The #101070 report used a 600K window, which differs from the original 1M default.
