How can an agent resolve this problem? FastMCP 4.1.0 with mcp 2.3.0: tools/call with arguments reportedly runs tools/list and list middleware
Finding: A reporter says that on fastmcp 4.1.0 with mcp 2.3.0, a 2026-07-28 Streamable HTTP tools/call carrying arguments runs a full FastMCP tools/list, including on_list_tools middleware and request logging (https://github.com/PrefectHQ/fastmcp/issues/5652). Reporter's analysis, not maintainer-confirmed: the SDK needs the tool's input schema to validate Mcp-Param headers. The reporter says python-sdk#3630, shipped in mcp 2.3.0, added an optional get_tool_input_schema keyword to the low-level Server. The reporter checked 4.1.0 and main at e2fcc4120 and says FastMCP does not pass it, so the SDK falls back to paging through tools/list.
Reported design constraints for a real fix: the SDK hook is synchronous while FastMCP tool resolution is async; returning None disables validation for that call with no listing fallback, so a local-only hook could stop x-mcp-header validation for proxied or mounted tools; tool transforms may require the wire schema; and the hook needs mcp>=2.3 while fastmcp-slim allows mcp>=2.0.0.
Mitigation (reporter-proposed, not verified by KFA): assigning a lambda returning None to server._mcp_server.get_tool_input_schema avoids the listing, but only when no tool declares x-mcp-header, because it disables that validation.
Status: the issue is open. The supplied snapshot shows no maintainer response and no linked FastMCP fix or release; comments are partial, so maintainer and fix status are UNKNOWN. KFA did not reproduce this.
Problem details
- Observed symptom
- Reporter says each such tools/call runs a full middleware-wrapped tools/list, so on_list_tools middleware and request logs run per call.
- Context
- low-level Server integration / Mcp-Param header validation; fastmcp 4.1.0 and main at e2fcc4120 (per reporter), with mcp 2.3.0, Python 3.14; tools/call with arguments on the 2026-07-28 Streamable HTTP path; Single external report; not reproduced by KFA; Reporter's runnable snippet was not run by KFA; Comment coverage is partial, so maintainer status is unknown; Workaround disables Mcp-Param validation and is unsafe if any tool, including proxied or mounted, declares x-mcp-header; Hook requires mcp>=2.3, while fastmcp-slim allows mcp>=2.0.0

Avoid per-call tools/list fallback when no tool uses x-mcp-header
Public source: https://github.com/PrefectHQ/fastmcp/issues/5652 . The issue documents that mcp 2.3.0 added an optional `get_tool_input_schema` hook after python-sdk PR #3630, while FastMCP 4.1.0/main did not wire it. Without the hook, the SDK falls back through `tools/list` to obtain the input schema for Mcp-Param validation. The issue explicitly documents the lambda returning `None` as a workaround. As of retrieval on 2026-10-11, the FastMCP issue remains open and no merged/released FastMCP fix was established.

- Proposed action
- On FastMCP 4.1.0 with mcp 2.3.0, if none of the server's exposed tools declares `x-mcp-header`, set `server._mcp_server.get_tool_input_schema = lambda name: None` before serving requests. This uses the low-level MCP server hook and prevents the SDK from falling back to a full `tools/list` lookup for each argument-bearing `tools/call`.
- Applicability
- State
- partial
- Text
- FastMCP 4.1.0 / reported main path with mcp 2.3.0, protocol 2026-07-28 Streamable HTTP, and only when no exposed/proxied/mounted tool relies on `x-mcp-header` validation.
- Limitations
- State
- partial
- Text
- Returning `None` disables Mcp-Param input-schema validation for the call. Do not use this workaround if any tool declares `x-mcp-header`. It is a source-documented workaround, not a KFA reproduction, maintainer-confirmed permanent fix, or released fix.
